Luxembourg: WiFi will remain free of charge!

At first it was due to last for a limited period of time – during Luxembourg’s Presidency of the European Union – but an announcement has just been made: Wi-Fi will remain free of charge in the City of Luxembourg beyond 31 January 2016.

Announced by HotCity and confirmed by Luxembourg city council, this decision had been hotly anticipated ever since an intermediate report disclosed the outstanding results achieved since the launch of the service in June 2015. During its first three months, the service logged 1.2 million connections on the CITYLUXFREE and CITYESCHFREE networks (the latter being the network available at Esch-sur-Alzette, which also covers Belval). This is tantamount to nearly 10,000 daily connections. On 9 September, a record 16,000 connections were logged. These results exceed the initial estimates by more than 50%.

No announcement has yet been made concerning the extension of the free Wi-Fi service in Esch-sur-Alzette. But the country’s second city has already let it be known that it would align itself with the policy followed by the capital city.

Thanks to this decision, Luxembourg has further bolstered its position as a connected capital, raising the Grand-Duchy that little bit further up the ranks of smart nations.
