free Wi-Fi: What if it were to continue?

Since the start of Luxembourg’s presidency of the Council of the European Union in July 2015, everyone in Luxembourg-city and Esch-sur-Alzette can enjoy completely free high-bandwidth wireless internet connectivity.

The initiative was launched by the government to bolster Luxembourg’s image as a “smart nation”. After three months of the country’s presidency, the interim report is unequivocal: the popularity of the free Wi-Fi is undeniable.

Whereas the government initially estimated that it could double the number of daily connections, these have increased more than three-fold since early July, reaching an average of nearly 9,900 daily connections. And the figures keep on growing: on 9 September 2015, there was a peak of 16,000 connections.

1.2 million connections were made over the first three months of the initiative. The dramatic increase in connections has been accompanied by intense user satisfaction, with many raving about the free service on the social networks: “Great initiative: free Wi-Fi for everybody in Luxembourg and Esch”, “Luxembourg has free city-wide Wi-Fi, making this the best city in the world”, “Reason number 1 why you should move to Luxembourg: free Wi-Fi everywhere.”

In light of this outstanding success, some are asking what will happen after the end of Luxembourg’s presidency. The players involved are looking into developing a concept that might perpetuate, or even extend the free Wi-Fi access beyond 31 January 2016.
